Marta Jovanović

“Jovanović is truly an artist of the twenty-first century. She can no longer call one country home, after living in Europe, the Middle East and North America. Her practice moves effortlessly between performance, sculpture, video and installation. She is interested in the legacy of feminism, but she also has deep admiration for her male forbears. Are these contradictory stances? They should not be. For identity today is a shifting and transforming process, rather than a fixed state. We have learned from the achievements as well as the mistakes of earlier feminist thought—prescribing what is a liberated feminism from what is not is a futile process. What is more enlightening is to understand that the postfeminist condition allows for a personal quantification of identity, one that is not forced or assigned. This is what our feminist predecessors fought for so bitterly—for our generation to have freedom to make our own choices about our bodies, our art, our lives.” Kathy Battista – Marta Jovanovic: Performing the Self, artist book published by The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center, of the City University of New York (2013).
Marta Jovanović co-founded PerformanceHUB (2015), performance art education program and a platform that provides students and artists with the innovative approach to education through encounters with the internationally renowned performance artists, professors and lecturers. PerformanceHUB operates under the wing of a non for profit and non government associated Galerija 12 HUB from Belgrade. Jovanovic is also the founder of Radisson Blu Belgrade Artist in Residency Program, in collaboration with Radisson Blu Old Mill Hotel Belgrade. The program encourages international artists to visit Belgrade, meet Serbian artists and curators and get to know the local art culture.
Part of the residency program is @The Room, a hotel suite turned an alternative performance art space. In 2017, Jovanović was a scholar in residency at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles while currently she is the subject of the upcoming documentary by Robert Adanto, Born Just Now scheduled to premier mid 2018.
